A Day at the Cow Sanctuary: A Lesson in Compassion and Care
On June 6th, 2026, members of the Jai Mahadev Group had the opportunity to visit the Laxmi Cow Sanctuary in Stroudsburg, PA. The experience was heartwarming, deeply inspiring, and above all, incredibly fulfilling. What we witnessed that day went far beyond expectations—it was a living example of kindness, respect, and harmony between humans and animals.

First Impressions
From the moment we arrived, there was an overwhelming sense of peace. The sanctuary was clean, spacious, and thoughtfully maintained. The cows roamed freely, grazing calmly and interacting gently with one another. Unlike commercial farms, there was no rush or pressure—only a serene environment where animals were allowed to simply be.
At first, the cows acknowledged our presence with curiosity; however, it soon became clear to them that treats would be served. Not only cows, but a flock of friendly roosters and chickens also welcomed us warmly, adding to the charm of the sanctuary.
How the Cows Are Treated
We learned that all the cows at the sanctuary were rescued. What truly stood out was the level of individual care each cow received. Every animal was treated as a unique being rather than a commodity, and many were given names inspired by Hindu mythology. The caretakers knew each cow by name and shared their stories—stories of rescue, healing, and second chances.
The cows were well-fed with nutritious food, had constant access to clean water, and were provided shelter from harsh weather. More importantly, they were treated with dignity, affection, and compassion. Observing the caretakers gently interact with them—petting them, speaking softly, and ensuring their comfort—was truly moving.
Team Engagement
Given the group’s deep-rooted spiritual connection, we felt an instant bond with the cows. We began feeding them freshly prepared moong beans, bananas, and chapatis. The cows responded with enthusiasm and joy, fully embracing the unexpected feast.
On a personal level, nothing felt more fulfilling than feeding a cow with my own hands. The entire environment became incredibly serene—so much so that one could almost imagine it accompanied by Lord Krishna’s flute music. It was a moment of pure connection and peace.

A Different Perspective
This visit transformed the way we perceive animals, especially cows, which are often viewed through a purely functional lens. Observing them closely revealed their distinct personalities—the curious ones, the shy ones, and those that were surprisingly social.
It made me reflect on how easily we overlook the emotional and sentient nature of animals. The sanctuary serves as a reminder that compassion is not just an abstract ideal—it is something we can actively practice in how we treat all living beings.
The Role of Sanctuaries
Cow sanctuaries like this play a vital role in society. They provide a safe haven for animals that have been abandoned, injured, neglected, or subjected to cruelty. Beyond that, they serve as educational spaces where visitors can learn about empathy, ethical living, and sustainable coexistence.
Witnessing this firsthand deepened my appreciation for the dedication and effort required to run such a sanctuary. It demands not only resources but a genuine and unwavering commitment to animal welfare.
A Personal Reflection
In today’s world, acts of compassion toward animals are more important than ever. In many ways, society has become disconnected from the emotional and spiritual significance of living beings. Experiences like this remind us of the impact we can have when we choose to act with kindness and awareness.
As we left the sanctuary, we felt a deep sense of gratitude and calm. The visit reminded us of the importance of slowing down and reconnecting—with nature, with animals, and with our own values. Personally, I found the experience of being with cows in nature to be even more spiritually fulfilling than visiting a crowded place of worship.
Closing Thoughts
Sanctuaries like this are rare and invaluable. Visiting them is not just an activity—it is a meaningful and transformative experience. More importantly, it is our responsibility to support such initiatives so they can continue their work of compassion and care.
Experiences like these stay with you long after you leave—they touch your heart, awaken your compassion, and inspire positive change.
A Satisfying Conclusion to the Day
Our journey continued after the sanctuary visit, leading us to the nearby Arsha Vidya Gurukulum for another spiritually enriching experience. In its quiet and expansive canteen area, our group gathered to enjoy a heartfelt meal prepared by fellow members.
The meal was more than just nourishment, it was a continuation of the day’s reflections, filled with shared memories, gratitude, and the joy we experienced in the presence of the cows.
